Test and tag for single phase and 3 phase appliances

Test and tag is the inspection and electrical testing of portable equipment that plugs into a power point, done to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760. Every item gets a visual inspection first, then the electrical tests that suit it. If it passes, it gets a tag. If it doesn't, it's tagged out of service and listed in your report, so nobody picks it up by mistake.

The tests we conduct

Our testing covers Class I (earthed) items, Class II (double insulated) items and cord sets, all to AS/NZS 3760.

Visual inspection

Every item is checked for damaged plugs, cut or crushed cords, exposed conductors, missing cord grips, burn marks and DIY repairs before it's tested.

Insulation resistance test

Measures the resistance of the insulation between live parts and earth, or between conductors, to confirm it's intact and not leaking current.

Earth continuity test

Checks the integrity of the earth connection, so any exposed metal parts are properly earthed and can't become live and shock someone.

Polarity Test

Confirms that the active, neutral and earth conductors are wired to the right pins, which matters most on extension leads and repaired cords.

Electrical Circuit

Important Note

Full RCD switchboard testing is a requirement under the AS/NZS 3760 standard and should be performed alongside standard test and tagging. As a building’s primary defense against electrical hazards, fully functional RCDs are just as critical if not more so than testing individual appliances.

Full RCD testing

A Residual Current Device (RCD), often called a safety switch, is one of the most important safety devices in any building. It watches the current flowing through a circuit and disconnects the power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking away, for example through a person. We test RCDs thoroughly to make sure they will trip, and trip fast enough, when it counts.

Push Button Testing

Every RCD has a test button. Pressing it simulates a fault and should make the RCD trip straight away. We push button test each device and record the result. It's a quick check that the mechanism isn't seized.

Full Trip Time Testing

A push button test only tells you the RCD can trip. A trip time (operating time) test uses an RCD tester to create a real, measured fault current and records exactly how many milliseconds the device takes to disconnect. A standard 30 mA RCD has to trip within 300 milliseconds. Anything slower, or anything that doesn't trip at all, is a fail.

On site appliance repairs

A lot of items fail for simple, fixable reasons. Instead of binning a perfectly good extension lead because the plug is cracked, we can often repair it on the spot, retest it and get it straight back to work. No waiting around, and no second visit.

How It Works

When something fails, we'll let you know whether it can be repaired and what it will cost before we touch it. Nothing gets repaired without your OK. Once fixed, the item is fully retested and tagged like anything else, and the repair is noted in your report.

Emergency exit lighting testing

Exit signs and emergency lights only matter on the worst day your building will ever have, which is exactly why they need regular testing. Batteries fade quietly. A light that glows for a few minutes and then dies won't get anyone out safely.

What We Check At Every Fitting

  • Switches to emergency mode when the power is cut

  • Stays lit for the full rated discharge time

  • Lamps or LEDs, lens and housing in good condition

  • Exit signs visible, legible and not blocked

  • Charging indicator back on once power is restored

Six Monthly Discharge Testing

Under AS/NZS 2293.2, emergency and exit lighting must be tested every six months. We cut the normal power to the fittings and make sure every one switches to battery and stays lit for its full rated duration, which is 90 minutes for most installations.

Recommended test and tag intervals

How often your gear needs testing depends on where it's used and how hard it works. These are the intervals from AS/NZS 3760. When we come out, we'll set each item's retest date based on your actual workplace.
